Why do I have High Blood Pressure?

Hey_You asked:

What is causing my high blood pressure? This past year, I’ve exercised the most in probably all of my life (and have lost weight, too).

There were a couple of instances where I had my blood pressure done and they all came back high. However, all three instances, I was nervous…could that have been to blame?

I’ve completely eliminated soda from my diet (lately, 2 weeks) I was drinking about 7 cans a day (diet, yes, i know) will this help?

it should help, maybe buy yourself a blood pressure moniter as they are not that expensive and do it yourself at home, you may find your more relaxed, not rushing to get to your apointment on time ect and it may be fine

It comes from 2 main places. If your arteries are wide and healthy, they handle a large flow of blood. Once they are narrowed ( you could have been born that way or you smoked cigarettes, etc) the heart has to pump harder to move same amount of blood. The increased force is the “pressure”.
The other thing is your heart itself. It is a muscle. It pumps. When healthy it pumps just enuf to move the blood and keep you alive. When damaged (heart attack) or diseased , it has to work harder to pump the blood. This extra effort is the “pressure”.
Exercise might make all the difference for one person and very little difference for another. DIet might be magic for one and not the other.
You are on the right track.

Make sure you are getting electrolytes. Dieting can miss some enough potassium, etc.

Do you eat salty foods? This can raise your BP also. Diet foods may sound healthy but they are loaded with sodium. Average daily recommend is less than 2500mg
