What’s the cause of my high blood pressure?

Mike Rotch asked:

Apparently, I have a high blood pressure (I think it’s 154 or something like that) but i’m not obese and I have a very healthy diet. I go jogging every morning. I’m 16 years of age.

it can be hereditary. electrolyte imbalance. too much fluid intake. unheatlhy weight. too much sodium in your diet, even though you said its healthy. or you just could have been stressed while getting your blood pressure taken. there are many factors that can contribute to high blood pressure.

high blood pressure i divided into 2 categories –

    1) Primary – 90%-95% of cases. the cause is unknown.
    2) secondary – the rest. there is a cause, sometimes reversible to the High blood pressure.

the flags of secondary hypertension are –
    1) lack of family history
    2) very high BP.
    3) BP that begins in a patient younger than 20 or older than 40-50
    4) resistible BP

since you are very young it can be beneficial to advise you GP regarding a workup for secondary hypertension.

It’s the second number that’s more critical, example 154/85 is not bad but 140/95 is high!

only a doc can tell you what really IS the cause of your high pressure.
you dont need to be obese to have high BP.

you also may have been born with predisposition to this condition.

You need to see a Dr, you may have to have medication to lower it. Leave caffeine alone, leave salt alone, that includes soda pop (very high in sodium (salt) ) especially diet soda, no smoking, no alcohol, limit fast foods (high in salt) . These lifestyle changes will help bring your BP down. See your Dr.
