Its not the best – its a thiazide diuretic and therefore works via the kidneys. ACE inhibitors protect the kidneys as well as reducing blood pressure.
go to Google Scholar, look up hypertension, thiazide diuretics and ACE inhibitors. By the time you’ve finished that, it will be 5a.m and you’ll be so tired that your blood pressure will have dropped

You should take what your doctor tells you and not listen to these people on the internet. Hydrochlorothiazide works well for mild hypertension, as well as being inexpensive. ACE inhibitors DO NOT protect the kidneys in patients with preexisting renal disease* and they are absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy. Furthermore, the effectiveness of ACE inhibitors and thiazides is also dependent on race and age.
Let me restate… follow what your doctor says with regards to the medication! Hydrochlorothiazide is a fine drug.
I feel like I’m fighting a perpetual war against google!
*ACE inhibitors do work well with a diabetic kidney.

All that has been said is OK , but a little over a year and ahalf ago, a study called ALLHAT came out in which the diuretics, such as hydrochlorthiazide, should be the first line of therapy.
Check Google on ALLHAT.

It’s still a top seller despite being one of the oldest. Not only is it dirt cheap, it does at least as well as any at decreasing the risk of cardiovascular events, which is why you want to treat high blood pressure to begin with. There’s a reason it’s still a top seller after all these years.
