Typically atherosclerosis causes hypertension ( high blood pressure) as when the plaque builds up over a period of time, it takes a greater force to pump the blood through, thus raising the blood pressure.
Systolic blood pressure is your heart at work, and your diastolic blood pressure is the heart at rest. Therefore, when blood pressure is repeatedly high, the effects are evident throughout the body, such as in the kidneys, the eyes, and a number of other organs.
Circulatory system essentially functions like a hot tub with the jets on.Water circulates from the hot tub, through the pipes, into the pump, and back into the hot tub. Your internal plumbing is like this as well. (Blood is like the water, heart is the pump, and blood vessels are the pipes.) When those pipes become clogged with grime over a period of time (plaque) the blood has a tougher time circulating through and the degree of force becomes greater, thus raising blood pressure and experiencing the adverse affects that come with the hypertension.
Prevention is key. Healthy balanced diet, eliminating the bulk of saturated fats, consistent exercise, weight management, and not smoking!
Medications may be necessary is there is a familial history, as genetics do play into some of this, but most of the time, there are controllable factors.
Hope that helps!

both are bad. however, since the bad effects of high blood pressure are generally only experienced by old people, while people of all ages can experience and die or be permanently injured from atherosclerosis, I would have to go with atherosclerosis. high blood pressure doesn’t even affect most younger people, and is easily treatable. In older people, whose arteries, especially the aorta, have hardened, high blood pressure can be devastating. Atherosclerosis, however, can happen to any age group, and can result in anything from loss of the use of a limb, or having to amputate a limb, or a stroke, or a heart attack, or even death.
