Question by : About low sodium recipes and how much sodium do we need a day?
My uncle is being advised by doctor to reduce his sodium intake from his diet, he has high blood pressure and i learned that by reducing the sodium intake it would help him to control the his hypertension also.

I need some advise on some low sodium recipes and also the sodium level per serving. I hope to learn more about low sodium food to help my uncle.

Best answer:

Answer by cloureku
We need 2400mg of sodium a day, but I suggest drinking a lot of water as well, this is the amount, but without water you’re giving your self nutrients along with dehydration. Just make sure to drink a decent amount of water with the sodium and not to eat out or touch most top ramens. I suggest (If you have the money) Orient your Uncle to all the fruits and vegetables. Ask him what his favorites were and just buy him those every time you go grocery shopping. Fruits aren’t a diet, they’re a pleasure, they cost too much to be considered an actual diet.

Question by butterfliesRfree: Ace vs. Arb in layman terms please…?
Wanted to ask doctor to change to an Ace (am on an Arb now for high blood pressure only) — was on beta blocker but because of beginning of COPD – taken off of that. Walmart has $ 4 prescriptions for Ace but not for Arb. Is there a reason I could not be placed on an Ace to reduce blood pressure and what could be the reasons. I’m not sure I understand the difference between the two medications. Again, layman terms please – not a medical dictionary explanation. Thank you.

Best answer:

Answer by c_schumacker
ACE inhibitors are known to have a side effect in some people of dry hacking cough – which in your case may be a problem. ARBs essentially do the same thing, except without the cough. As you can imagine the ARBs came along later and therefore are still on patent (no yet generic for the most part) and therefore will not be on the $ 4 list. You could try an ACE. It will take a couple of months before you realize the side effect.

I hope this helps.

Question by capel: I need Stats help please?
A researcher wishes to determine whether people with high blood pressure can reduce their blood pressure by following a particular diet. A 95% confidence interval for 1 –2 based on sample data is given by (-26.79, -2.41) where 1 is the population mean blood pressure level for the treatment group and 2 is the population mean blood pressure level for the control group. Based on this confidence interval, what, if any, conclusions can we draw?

Best answer:

Answer by cidyah
The difference (treated minus control) in mean blood pressure varies anywhere between -26.79 and -2.41 with 95 % probability (confidence).
You may interpret it in terms of blood pressure and treatment.

Question by mrscmmckim: Any dietitian out there want to help me? Please!?
I have the following conditions:
Diabetes
Hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s)
High Blood Pressure
High Cholesterol
Fatty Liver
Hyperclotability
IgG deficiency
Hypotestosteronenemia

I am on a dozen drugs, I weigh 165 (am loosing weight quickly due to diabetes drugs), I don’t drink, do street drugs, haven’t eaten beef or pork in 26 years. I eat healthfully but due to illness, my activity level has been low. I am up to walking now for 30 mins a day. I am very aware of the foods I eat, am super careful but when I was told day before yesterday I have a fatty liver, I just sort of lost it. I try so hard to eat right but now there is so little I can eat.

I need a dietitian to customize a diet for me that will lower my cholesterol, reduce my high blood pressure, not interfere with my coumadin levels, aids the diabetes and will reduce the fatty liver as well as boost my immune system!

Help!?

Best answer:

Answer by FitGuy
According to the medical history you present, you need something more like a Naturopathic Doctor. You may find some dieticians well-versed in the above conditions, but they typically are not qualified to address your conditions solely through diet suggestions.

Question by Tracy P: Blood pressure and test results?
Something strange happened to me today. I found out on March 20th that I had high blood pressure today is March 24 and I have lost 13 pounds already. I was so scared with the fact that the EKG might has shown left side heart problems. I went for my Echocardiogram today no results yet. But the big deal was when I went to my Well Woman Exam today they took my blood pressure and it was 94/68 I was really scared in fear that maybe my doctor put me on Bp meds to soon as he didn’t even evaluate me for a few days and monitor my BP he just immediatley put me on meds for a BP of 140/100. Now I have to say that I do feel 100% better than I did prior to taking the meds but not to sure if I really need them or not and I am worried that my BP may drop to low while I am sleeping as I know it goes lower while you sleep at night. I don’t want to die from these pills. And my BP has always been on the lower side of normal my whole life. Even up to about 3 months ago it was reading at like 118/76 and numbers like that sometimes even lower. So not sure what is going on. What is your opinion I mean I know you can’t diagnose me but I am thinking that maybe the 13 pounds of weight changed somehting.. I have read that even 10 pounds can make a difference.. But I also have reduced my sodium intake very drastically and I am eating 1000 calories a day with nothing but lean meats, fruit and veggies and nothing but water for my drink absolutely nothing but water and getting in my 118 ozs per day as my weight now is 241 and I am 5 ft 6.. I plan on maintaing the diet until I am at least 150.. I know I can do it. Just not sure I want to be on these meds.. And not sure that my doc is making the best choice. Thanks for you help. By the way I am only taking 5mg of Amlodipine or Norvasc I think is he name brand 1 time daily.

Answer by John
I saw my cardiologist after a similar event and he said he would like to know more before he put me on bp medicine.
