Does anyone have any experience with pre existing hypertension and pregnancy? What meds are safe to take?

Emilyb538 asked:

I have hypertension, I am 25 years old. I currently take Coreg CR. Which is a class C pregnancy drug. I want to start making plans to get pregnant with my husband in the next year or so. Is there anyone out there who can relate to my situation or has been through pregnancy with high blood pressure that can share their stories or give me any advice? Also, any suggestions on safer anti hypertensives for pregnancy? Thank you!

I am in your same situation. I just turned 26 and am 11 weeks pregnant now. When I got married, I went to the doc and had them change my blood pressure medicine to something that would be safe in case I did get prego. I was on birth control, but I just wanted to be safe in case it didn’t work:). I am on labetalol now. I talked with my ob/gyn about this at my first appointment and he said that it is safe. He said it is the medication that he would have switched me too. He also said it will not make my child deformed lol. The only risk he said was that it could effect the baby’s growth later in pregnancy, so he is going to do more ultrasounds during the last 10 weeks to follow it. Having pre-existing hypertension does put you at higher risk of having blood pressure issues later in pregnancy too, therefore higher risk of delivering early. I also work in the NICU and see this happen a lot. I am just thinking positive though:) He says he will watch me closely and that I should be okay. I would look into Labatalol. I know it is safe. Hope this helps!
